The Medical College of Georgia (often referred to as MCG) is the oldest and founding school of Georgia Regents University and the flagship public medical school for the U.S. state of Georgia. Established in 1828 as the Medical Academy of Georgia, MCG is the third-oldest medical school in the Southeast. MCG was founded in 1828 as the Medical Academy of Georgia by the Medical Society of Augusta to train new physicians. In 2011, the University System of Georgia Board of Regents officially changed the name from the Medical College of Georgia to Georgia Health Sciences University, to reflect the university having "more than just a medical school". Georgia Regents University, home of the Medical College of Georgia, is one of only four public comprehensive research institutions in the state of Georgia Founded in 1828, the university includes nine colleges and schools. The universitys mission is to provide leadership and excellence in teaching, discovery, clinical care and service as a student-centered comprehensive research university and academic health center with a wide range of programs from learning assistance through postdoctoral studies.
